چکیده

1. Introduction The Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) radiances have been operationally assimilated in the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) global 3D-Var data assimilation system since 28 May 2003. It replaced TOVS/ATOVS retrievals, which had been assimilated in the JMA global data assimilation system. The direct assimilation of ATOVS radiances is superior to its retrieval assimilation because the retrievals have some error in their conversion from radiance to analysis variables such as temperature and relative humidity. Data assimilation experiments, which was conducted before the operational use of ATOVS radiances demonstrated significant impacts on forecasts and analyses. This report describes the ATOVS data used at JMA and some results of the assimilation experiments.

Use of AMSU data in the Met Office UK Mesoscale Model

In common with other global NWP centres, assimilation of radiances from the ATOVS instrument package at the Met Office results in a large benefit to global NWP forecasts (English et al., 2000) and has been used operationally since mid-1999 in the Met Office global 3D-Var system. Recently work has been carried out to assess the impact of using radiances from the AMSU A&B instruments in the UK Me...

Improving Regional Forecast by Assimilating Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) Profiles into WRF model

The use of state-of-the-art hyperspectral sensors--such as the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) on NASA’s polar-orbiting Aqua satellite--to retrieve high vertical resolution thermodynamic profiles and their subsequent assimilation into forecast models holds promise in improving weather predictions. This improved vertical resolution over previous capabilities results from the use of thousands...

Assimilation of DoD Sensor Data Into Operational Forecast Models

Remotely-sensed observations from satellites hold great promise for providing a wealth of hightemporal and spatial resolution data, particularly over the oceans. However, it has been very difficult for numerical weather prediction systems to show consistent, positive forecast improvement attributable to satellite retrievals obtained in the conventional manner. By developing techniques for the d...

Assimilating AMSU-A Radiances in the TC Core Area with NOAA Operational HWRF (2011) and a Hybrid Data Assimilation System: Danielle (2010)

A regional hybrid variational–ensemble data assimilation system (HVEDAS), the maximum likelihood ensemble filter (MLEF), is applied to the 2011 version of the NOAA operational Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) model to evaluate the impact of direct assimilation of cloud-affected Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) radiances in tropical cyclone (TC) core areas. The forwar...
